  • Active fault codes: Use your dash display to check for «Aftertreatment» codes before the truck forcedly shuts down.
  • Loss of boost: A whistling sound combined with a stall usually points to a ruptured turbo hose.

The role of the neutral safety switch and controls

Sometimes, the «stall» isn’t an engine failure at all, but a safety protocol triggered by the transmission. In trucks equipped with automated manual transmissions (AMTs), a faulty neutral safety switch or a confused gear actuator can kill the ignition circuit if the computer believes the truck is in an unsafe state. Furthermore, security systems or «anti-theft» modules can occasionally malfunction, cutting fuel to the engine because they no longer recognize the key or the electronic signature of the tractor.
